First-semester Science and Mathematics Students Win Award for Research Presentation

2016 Dec 13

Jessica Reyes (Computational and Applied Mathematics), Alyssa Ontiveros (Chemistry) and Sarah Khweis (Chemistry) are students in their first semester at KSU. The young women are students in a learning community with the theme "Student Success in Science and Mathematics." As part of their first-year seminar course, the students did research projects on factors associated with academic success. These research projects included everything from hypothesis creation to literature review to data collection and analysis, and finally, the writing of a formal research paper. Reyes, Ontiveros and Khweis decided to take their results to the next level and entered KSU's First-Year Student Academic Extravaganza Learning Communities Showcase. Their research was on the academic impacts of living on campus versus commuting. For the quality of their research and their ability to communicate about it, the team won the Professionalism Award. This is an exciting and positive start to college for these students who plan careers in biostatistics and medicine.
