James wins top prize in Georgia screenwriting competition

Kandace James, a second-year masters student in Kennesaw State's Master of Arts in Professional Writing, won first prize in the Georgia Shorts Film Festival for her screenplay "Cutting Teeth." It is the fourth honor for this screenplay, which follows a self-conscious tween, who while being burdened with black teeth and the memories of her mother, strategizes to replace her teeth with white ones, but runs into trouble.

Star student overcomes homelessness to excel

Carrie Lyn Barron, a non-traditional cellular, molecular and developmental biology major and student in KSU Journey Honors College, works in the lab of professor of biochemistry Jonathan McMurry, works two jobs and cares for her husband, Jay, who has autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). She donated a kidney to him in 2014. Complications and expenses from the disease and resulting treatments cost the couple their house, and they lived in their car for a year and a half. With support from Kennesaw State's Campus Awareness, Resource and Empowerment (CARE) Services, the couple now have a stable place to live. College of Science and Mathematics honors 2017-2018 Outstanding Graduating Students

Congratulations to the nine College of Science and Mathematics Outstanding Graduating Student Award recipients! The students and their faculty mentors were honored on Saturday, April 28. The College's 2017-2018 student recipients are Omar Ugarte Trejo, M.S. in Chemical Sciences; Kevin Patel, B.S. in Biochemistry; Reagan Hooper, B.S. in Chemistry; James Thornhill, M.S. in Integrative Biology; Rebecca Webster, B.S. in Environmental Science; Lee Spence, B.S. in Mathematics; David Axford, B.S. in Biology; Matthew Forslund, B.S. in Physics; and Jonathan Boardman, M.S. in Applied Statistics. Each year, department faculty in the College of Science and Mathematics choose one outstanding graduating student per academic degree program. Outstanding students are selected based on notable achievements within their major, including having earned an exceptional GPA, as well as in extracurricular, research or professional activities.

Kennesaw State student's research debuted on Capitol Hill

Kennesaw State University psychology major Olivia Lauzon presented her research to members of Congress, their staffs and other federal officials in Washington, D.C., during the 22nd Annual "Posters on the Hill" competition in April. It is the first time a KSU student has presented at the Capitol Hill event.

MSAS student research creates interdisciplinary focus

As a biology undergraduate, Reuben Hilliard conducted research in the Paula Jackson lab. He has continued to work with Dr. Jackson during his graduate studies by analyzing data from their research while currently enrolled in the Masters of Science in Applied Statistics program. Reuben presented part of the results from the research at the 2016 SAS Day competition at KSU, where he won top poster award. Hilliard is a 2015 Clendenin Scholar and received the CarMax Academic Scholarship consecutively in spring 2016 and 2015. His research intersects the disciplines of biology and statistics, focusing on environmental sciences. He is also employed as a data analyst at an Atlanta-based health care provider.
